Diwali Celebrations

October 20th, 2009

On Friday 16th October, children and staff celebrated the Indian festival of Diwali. It was a very busy day with lots of activities available for the children to take part in. For example, they could taste Indian food, have their hands decorated with ‘mendhi’ style patterns, colour Rangoli patterns, listen to Indian music, make peacocks, make clay diva lamps, make paper lanterns and make Indian flags. We also had some traditional Indian sweets to taste- they were delicious! Here are some photos of some of the activities. We hope you like them.

Welcome to Early Years

September 29th, 2009

So far we have been very pleased with how all the children seem to be settling into the daily routine. The Reception children are already enjoying their new responsibilities of acting as ‘Buddies’ to the Nursery children. Some good friendships are already being formed!

The Early Years Unit is set out into three main areas – Language, Numeracy and Knowledge & Understanding of the World, plus the Outdoor area. Each class visits all of these areas for focused activities.

During focused activities all work is differentiated to suit the different developmental needs of individual children.

This term our Topic is ‘All About Me and My Family’. We will be looking at the different parts of our bodies and what we use them for, our senses, emotions, personal hygiene, people in our family etc..

In Language, we are currently focusing on letter sounds and correct letter formation with Reception children, and speaking and listening skills with Nursery children. Each week, we have a ‘News Time’ session whereby Reception children write their news and Nursery children recall their news orally.

In Mathematical Development, we are concentrating on counting skills and number recognition. Reception children will also be focusing on recording and correct number formation.

Personal, Social & Emotional wellbeing is an important area especially during the first term. Our primary aim is to ensure that all the children are happy and settled. We will then concentrate on social skills, listening skills, manners, personal hygiene and dressing/undressing skills.

As part of our Harvest celebrations, Reception children will be taking part in the Harvest Festival in Church on Monday 28th September at 1.30pm. All Reception parents are welcome to attend. Children are asked to bring a small food donation into school on that day. Please ensure that your food item is not too big or bulky as each child needs to be able to carry their gift over to Church (a challenge in itself)!! Nursery children are welcome to bring a donation if they wish.

As part of encouraging all children to become independent we would  be grateful if Nursery parents could encourage their children to hang up their own coats, put away reading folders etc. when they come into school. This helps children to become familiar with their peg and possessions for when they have to collect their coat, pump bag etc. at the end of the session.

Please ensure that all children have their PE kit in school each week. All Nursery children have PE on Monday. Dosbarth D Reception children have PE on Tuesday and Wednesday. Dosbarth E Reception children have PE on Tuesday and Thursday. Dosbarth G Reception children have PE on Wednesday and Thursday.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents to ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled.

Finally, please come along to the Early Years Coffee Morning on Tuesday 6h October at 9.15am. You will have the opportunity to learn more about the Early Years Curriculum as well as meet other parents.

Everyone welcome!

If you have any concerns regarding your child, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the Early Years staff.

Thank you for your continued support and co-operation.

Mrs Goodwin, Mrs Dobie and Miss Evans

Ugly Bug Ball

July 5th, 2009
On Friday 3rd JulyEarly Years children had an ‘Ugly Bug Ball’ as part of their Topic on minibeasts. Children (and staff) were invited to come to school dressed as a minibeast of their choice. There were some fantastic costumes and a big thank you to parents for all the effort they had gone to!

There were lots of activities for the children to take part in. They could make banana caterpillar, snail sandwiches, ladybird biscuits, handprint spiders,  playdough spiders and decorate butterflies. They could also play ladybird dominoes, build a bug game, as well as use a paint program on the interactive whiteboard  to draw minibeasts. Most children also had their faces painted, thanks to Miss Evans, Miss Williams, Mrs Sue Jones and Mr. Williams.

For snack the children had minibeast jelly, minibeast cakes (kindly made by Mrs Marshall - big thank you!!), and worms (Wotsit crisps!).

Also during the day, all children took part in a Barnardos Sponsored Toddle around the school grounds. Well done to all the children. We hope that we have raised lots of money for this worthy charity and would be grateful if all sponsor money could be returned to school asap.

Here are some photos of the day. We hope you like them.

Early Years Visits to Alyn Waters

June 10th, 2009

All Early Years children visited Alyn Waters during the week commencing 1st June as part of their Topic on Minibeasts.

During the day they took part in various actitivities such as hunting for minibeasts, making colourful crowns using natural materials found in the environment,  making clay models of minibeasts, playing a caterpillar game and looking for dragon flies and caterpillars.

It was a very hands-on experience for the children and they all had a great time. In fact, they have been looking for minibeasts everywhere since!!

A big thank you to all the parent and grand-parent helpers who accompanied us on our visits.
